Best Practices for Updating PointFire 365
Posted by Martin Laplante on 11 April 2019 04:59 PM

Changes to SharePoint Online that affect PointFire functionality have occurred twice in the past four years. Each time we had a fix within 24 hours, long before the change reached general availability.  Microsoft rolls out new or changed features in targeted release clients, and these are experimental and they sometimes change before they are made available in regular release, weeks or months later. We never know in advance how long a new feature will stay in targeted release before it becomes generally available in production.

We recommend that you subscribe to PointFire product release announcements, details here

We also recommend that you have a separate "first release" tenant, for which we will give you a free PointFire license, so that you can monitor changes, and test our pre-release patches to ensure that they work for you, prior to upgrading your production tenant with our production release.  Microsoft has several options for free or inexpensive tenants that can be used for testing.

We also recommend having an upgrade plan in place, because sometimes software upgrades may be required unexpectedly. The PointFire 365 zip file includes PowerShell scripts for upgrading the apps and for activating them.  Upgrading can also be done manually.  The typical sequence of events is to add the two apps into your app catalog, overwriting the previous version, then in each site that uses it click "Details" then "Get It" and "Trust It" if required for both the PointFire 365 and the PointFire 365 Modern apps.  When it's updated, click on PointFire 365 and click "Activate", which should be flashing.  There is no need to change or re-set any settings.

This is the nature of cloud software, unfortunately, there is not always much prior notice of changes, but we are working on improving our processes to minimize the impact on you.
